After a short stay near Port Rowan, they settled on his father's homestead. James served in the War of 1812. James and Nancy had 10 children over the 13 years before James died. Nancy and children stayed on the farm with her aged mother-in-law. Responsibility for the farm fell to her eldest son, Simpson (then 13), and assorted brothers-in-law.
