John Pratt

A highly respected resident of Simcoe for 33 years, John Pratt, passed away in Norfolk General Hospital on Wednesday, in his 69th year, following two months' illness.

Mr. Pratt was born in Brighton, Sussex, England, on 31 Dec 1875, and in 1911 came to Canada with his wife and family to make his home in Simcoe.

In 1916 he enlisted with the 133rd Battalion, going overseas in 1917. He saw service in France and received his discharge early in 1918 while serving as a lance-corporal.

Deceased was a member of St. James United Church and of the Sons of England, holding the office of Supreme Trustee in the latter organization at the time of his death.

In politics he was a staunch and active Liberal. 

He was one of the committee responsible for the erection of the Norfolk War Memorial Carillon Tower, and was one of the veterans active in forming the Great War Veterans' Association. 

For some time he was court crier and until the time of his death, held the office of sheriff's constable.

He leaves to mourn his loss one son, Sydney Roberts Pratt of Simcoe; a granddaughter, L.A.W. Amy Pratt, meteorological observer, stationed at No. 14 S.F.T.S., Aylmer; and three grandsons, John R. and Sydney W. Pratt of Simcoe, and LaVerne Jones of Orillia.

A daughter, Nora, died shortly after coming to Simcoe and another daughter, Mrs. Amy Jones, predeceased him in 1928.

Mr. Pratt is resting at the H. R. MacGregor Funeral Home where service will be held on Saturday at 2.30 o'clock. Rev. W. E. V. McMillen of Trinity Anglican Church and Rev. E. W. Brearley of St. James United Church will have charge of the service. Interment will be made in Oakwood Cemetery.
