Harold Squire of Waterford 
dies suddenly 

One of Waterford's best-known citizens and a veteran of both the First and Second World Wars, Harold O. Squire died suddenly last evening in Christie Street Hospital, Toronto.

A native of Waterford, the late Mr. Squire, who was in his 47th year, was the only son of the late S. L. Squire, formerly Deputy Minister of Highways in Ontario, and the late Mrs. Squire, the former Clara McMichael. His mother died when he was born and he was raised by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar McMichael.

He received his education in Waterford Public and High Schools, enlisting in the First World War in 1917 and serving overseas with the 67th Battery of the Royal Canadian Artillllery.

In October 1920 he married the former Muriel Roberts, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Roberts of Simcoe.
Shortly after his return from overseas, he went into fruit farming, continuing iin this occupation until his enlistment in the Second World War in July 1941.

Active in community affairs, he served during 1940 as a councillor and was elected reeve in 1941, tendering his resignation at the time of enlistment. He also held the office of secretary of the Public School Board, President of Waterford Branch Canadian Legion, and president of the Waterford-Townsend Red Cross Society. He was a member of Waterford Baptist Church and for some time was a trustee of the church.

In February 1941, he joined the 41st Battery of the 25th (R) Norfolk Field Brigade, being struck off strength when he went on active service. He was an artillery instructor at Brandon and Camp Shilo, rising to the rank of Major and for a time being temporarily Officer Commanding the Artillery Wing at Camp Shilo. He received his discharge from the Army early this summer and since September has been confined to Christie Street Hospital.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, William S. O. Squire of Toronto, a veteran of the Second World War; one daughter, Denise of Toronto, and his step-mother, Mrs. S. L. Squire, also of Toronto.

The funeral will be held in Waterford on Wednesday afternoon with interment in Greenwood Cemetery.
