Local Couple 62 Years Wed

Sixty-two years ago Wednesday of this week, on April 25, 1883, William W. Walsh, of Simcoe, for years a farmer near Bloomsburg, later retiring and settling at St. Williams, was married at Mount Zion parsonage to Elida Brown, a native of Middleton.

Thus it is that Mr. and Mrs. Walsh of College Avenue, Simcoe, will quietly mark the 62nd anniversary of their marriage on Wednesday. Both are enjoying good health and carry on their daily tasks about the house and garden in remarkable fashion.

Mr. Walsh who is a great-grandson of Thomas Welsh, first registrar of Deeds and first land surveyor for Norfolk, was born in Simcoe on March 1, 1860, near the site of the present Willis Kindy store, and is a son of the late Walter Walsh and Mary Kitchen.

Walter Walsh was the third son Francis Legh Walsh, who followed his father, Thomas Welsh, mentioned above, as Registrar of Deeds for this county, which post he held from almost 75 years.

The groom of 62 years ago is connected with old Norfolk family through his mother. He is the only survivor of a family of three children. Mrs. Alfred Sparrow of Bloomsburg is a half-sister.

Returning to his native town several years ago, Mr. Walsh purchased his present home on College Avenue just south of No. 3 Highway.

Mrs. Walsh is 83 years of age, the daughter of Peter and Joanna May Brown. Besides Mrs. Walsh, of a family of eight children, there are still living Mrs. William Post of Simcoe, Mrs. Louise Hiltz of Baltimore and Oliver Brown of Toronto. Another brother, Edward Brown of Cleveland, passed away little more than a year ago. When Mrs. Walsh was quite young, the family left Middleton and settled in Charlotteville.

Mr. Lewis Walsh, College Ave., is the son of Mr. Walsh by a previous marriage to Celia Young of Caledonia, who died after a brief married life. Mr. and Mrs. Walsh's only son is Burleigh Walsh of Detroit; and they have two adopted daughters, Mrs. Charles Young of Tonawanda, N.Y., and Mrs. Stanley Oakes of Port Dover. There are also 18 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Walsh are members of the Baptist denomination.
