The following is a complete transcription of an article from the 22 May 1884 Waterford Star.

A Fatal Stroke -- A sad accident occurred at Courtland on Monday evening. Mr. Francis Swiss, a wealthy and much respected farmer of that village, left home about 7 o'clock p.m. to look for some cattle. Not returning his sons started to look for him about ten p.m. No trace of him was discovered until early this morning, when his body was found under a tree where he had taken shelter from a severe thunder storm. The lightning had struck the tree, and glancing off struck him. Death was instantaeous, as his hands were found in his pockets as he had been standing. Deceased was an influential man in the community, and will be much missed.
