Young neighbor charged in death

TILLSONBURG -- A 16-year old man has been charged with the second degree murder of a 96-year old woman.

Willena Mae Stansell, 96, Tillsonburg, was found Sunday stabbed to death in her apartment on 24 Oxford Street. A neighbor, 16, was arrested by Tillsonburg town police and OPP on Sunday night at 6 p.m. He was remanded in custody until May 16 for a psychiatric examination when he appeared Monday in Woodstock provincial court.

Stansell lived alone and her body was discovered by her daughters Erva Johnson, 66, of Kenmore, New York, and Hazel Reynolds, 74, R.R.3, Tillsonburg at 10.50 a.m.

Coroner Dr. Raymond Kaillie said Stansell had been stubbed more than 35 times and died from "a loss of blood from multiple and severe stab wounds and abrasions."

Sgt. Don Crowe said the town's 10,000 residents are in "a state of shock" and added he can't remember [another] murder case in his 14 years on the force.

Police chief Henry Harley said police are still asking residents whether they heard something during the attack. Police found a knife believed to be the murder weapon in a garbage can outside the apartment building.
