[R. J. Somers]

Death claimed another of Waterford's and Townsend's well known and highly respected citizens, the late Robert James Somers, in his 78th year, on Wednesday, the 9th inst.

Mr. Somers was for many years a successful farmer near Rockford and moved to Waterford about nineteen years ago.

His health had been quite poor for a few years.

He is survived by a sorrowing widow, two sons, Frank M. of Townsend Township, and Dr. Wallace of Saskatchewan, and two daughters, Mrs. W. J. Swanton and Mrs. Lottie Bauslaugh, to whom the sincere sympathy of the entire community extended.

The deceased is also survived by one brother, John Somers of Tillsonburg, three half-brothers, and a half-sister, Mrs. Fred Alway, way [sic], besides several nephews and grandchildren.

The funeral took place no [sic] Saturday afternoon at two o'clock and was well attended. Rev. H. Caldwell conducted the services. Interment at Greenwood Cemetery. Four nephews and two grandchildren were the pall-bearers.

On Monday, Feb. 7th Mrs. Betty Pratten, who has been ailing considerably the past few years, was smitten with paralysis and without ever regaining consciousness lingered until the early hours of Sunday morning, when she passed peacefully away at the advanced age of eighty-three years.

The deceased was the relict of the late Isaac Pratten, who died in Walpole Township in the year 1897.

The late Mrs. Pratten, with her daughter Mary, then moved to Waterford, where they have since resided.

Mrs. Pratten was a lifelong member of the Methodist church, known far and wide and beloved by everyone, for no matter who was in need of help Mrs. Pratten was, if at all possible, ready to render assistance and speak words of consolation to the sorrowing.

The departed is survived by three sons: Fred of Nanticoke; Arthur of Portland, Oregon; Watson of Milton, North Dakota; and three daughters, Mrs. Long of Nanticoke, Mrs. Robertson of Portland, Ore., and Miss Pratten of Waterford; and also a number of grandchildren.

To these sorrowing relatives the sincerest sympathy is extended.

The funeral took place from the deceased's late residence, Leamon Street, Waterford, on Tuesday at 9 a.m. After a short service at the house the remains were conveyed to the home of her son Fred, at Nanticoke, where a service was held. Services were conducted by Rev. H. Caldwell and interment in the Nanticoke cemetery.

Mr. Arthur Pratten and Mrs. Robertson of Portland, Oregon, and Mr. Watson Pratten of North Dakota, were unable to attend their mother's funeral.

Messrs. Waldo Pratten of Woodstock, Wray of Peterborough and George of Hamilton, attended their grandmother's funeral on Tuesday.
