Lemuel P. Pursel

The death of Lemuel P. Pursel occurred on Thursday last, Jan. 27th, 1898. The funeral which took place on Saturday as largely attended, friends being present from many parts of the county. Services were conducted by Rev. A. Slaght.

Mr. Pursel was 72 years, four months, and four days old. He was born in Pennsylvania, near Danville, Columbia county, Sept. 27, 1825, and was the third son of Jonathan and Joanna Pursel, there being five sons and two daughter in the family.

When deceased was quite young, his parents came to Canada, driving all the distance in a wagon and settled in the Township of Windham in 1838. When a young man Mr. Pursel resided in Simcoe for a number of years as an apprentice with the late Lyman Wells in the cabinet business.

After acquiring his trade he went to the town of Vienna, near Port Burwell, where he began business on his own account. After some time he met the misfortune of being burned out and he then decided to recommence his occupation in Waterford, which was in 1849. The business is the oldest now in the village, constantly carried on by any one person.

Mr. Pursel was united in marriage to his now bereft companion, Abigail Young, on April 14th, 1850, and after settling in Waterford, and by whom there were four sons, Nelson, Dennis, Lewis H., and Thomas, who died at the age of 27 years. The three surviving sons attended the funeral to show the last tribute of respect and love for the father who was so much [re]vered and honored by them.
