The Late Mrs. (Dr.) Phelan

Mrs. (Dr.) Phelan died quite unexpectedly at her home in Walsingham Centre on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 22nd, and was buried on Tuesday afternoon following.

Her life since 1867 was spent in Walsingham Centre, where she made a great many friends. She was born in England and came to Port Rowan when a child with her father, the late John Leaton, Esq. After her marriage Port Rowan remained her home until her removal to Walsingham Centre.

One sister, Mrs. S. P. Mabee, of Port Rowan, survives her. All of her living children, Christopher of Sault Ste. Marie; John of Port Arthur; Miss Susan Phelan and Miss Mattie Phelan were able to get home for the funeral.

Mrs. Phelan was a faithful member of the English Church, and delighted in the opportunities afforded her for the support of its missions and general work. Some of her contributions for the children of the Indians have just started on their long journey to McLeod, Alberta, N.W.T., for the mission school there.

To those at home who needed counsel or sympathy or help, she was always a warm friend. It was natural to her to do and say kind things, and it is no wonder that the people loved her. The sense of humor was strong in her, and she was always a lively and cheerful companion. She lived to a good old age, seventy-seven years, but her many virtues so endeared her to the younger generation that her departure caused the deepest regret throughout the whole community.
