MR. JOHN PHELAN

Daily Phoenix, Saskatoon: A gloom was cast over this city yesterday when the public received the sad intelligence of the deaths [sic] of Mr. John Phelan, which occurred the previous night (May 4).

That the worst was expected during several days in no way lessened the regret among all classes of the community among whom he was held in the utmost esteem.

Mr. Phelan has suffered acutely for some weeks from an internal malady, and although all that science and skill could afford were rendered him, the end came the night before last as stated.

Mr. Phelan was in his 50th year, was born in Norfolk County, Ontario and was a son of the late Dr. Phelan, of Walsingham Centre.

He was associated with the Canadian Northern for many years and first came west to Battleford. He was afterwards at Port Arthur, and was transferred to this city as general agent for the company three years ago. With the management of the Canadian Northern he was looked upon with confidence, and his business thoroughness and unfailing courtesy made for him a large circle of friends.

He was a man devoid of the least trace of ostentation. His word was his bond and he possessed commecial [sic] attributes. Generally the last to speak his utterances invariably was considered with respect and generally acted upon.

He was a member of the Board of Trade and his work for the city was characterized by a quiet force and dignity which found itself expressed more in the quieter channels of public service than on the platform. He was essentially a man of action and of ideals.

To his widow and daughter, brother and sisters, the utmost sympathy is extended.

At the funeral on Thursday full Masonic honors were observed. Mr. Phelan having been a Past Master of the order.
