The Late Mrs. Joseph Oakes

Mrs. Rachel E. Oakes passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. A. Dedrick, Ellis street, Port Rowan, on Monday evening, Nov. 23rd. She had been ailing for a long time, but no serious turn was immediately anticipated.

Mrs. Oakes was a daughter of the late Richard W. Moore, Esq., and was born at her father's farm in Charlotteville, near Vittoria, in 1822. There she married Mr. Joseph Oakes, and came to reside in Simcoe, afterwards removing to Port Rowan. Two children were born to them, the late Mr. William Oakes, who died in Port Rowan three years ago, and Mrs. J. A. Dedrick, who survives to mourn her loss.

The funeral to Bay View cemetery on Wednesday afternoon was well attended. The services were conducted by the Rev. W. H. Garnham, B.A., B.D., who spoke most feelingly.

Throughout her life Mrs. Oakes was a valued member of the Methodist church, a delightful christain of bright and sunny nature, with heart-overflowing with good will towards her fellows.

Thus has passed away another of the pioneers of Norfolk, another link with the historic past.
