The death of John Nicol, which occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alex. Mercer, Hamilton, on the 1st inst., in the 80th year of his age, leaves another gap in the almost depleted ranks of the pioneers of this section.

Deceased emigrated to this country from Elginshire, Scotland, when a young man, settling in Port Dover, where he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Nicols, sister of Rev. Peter Nicols of Simcoe.

Soon after coming here he decided to give up the carpenter trade at which he had work [sic] previously, and engage in farming.

After a few years spent in operating various farms in this locality he purchased the farm now owned and occupied by Mr. Doc Parkinson, where he resided until shortly after the death of Mrs. Nicol, about six years ago.

Two sons and two daughters were born to them, all of whom were present at their father's bedside during his closing hours. They are: Charles of Walpole, Rev. John L. of Swift Current, Sask., Mrs. Alex. Mercer of Hamilton, and Miss Annie of Buffalo, N.Y.

Interment took place in Knox Church Cemetery, Jarvis, on the 4th inst., after which service was held in the church. Rev. Mr. Russell of Erskine Church, Hamilton, officiated.
