OBITUARY
Edward Nash

The Port Rowan News says: Edward Nash died at his home in Leamington on Saturday, September 12, in his 72nd year. The funeral took place on Tuesday, the 15th, at 2 p.m., services at St. John's church, and interment at Lake View cemetery. The local Masonic lodge had charge of the funeral, and the attendance was very large. We take the following sketch from the Leamington Post:

He was born in Kent county, England, on December 6, 1836, and came to the wilds of Canada in 1851. He spent four years of boyhood at Fort Erie, and then moved to Walsingham township. He spent several winters in the lumber camps. In 1861 he married Miss Ponting, the eldest daughter of George and Elizabeth Ponting, of Walsingham. In addition to this wife he leaves a family of seven children, all of whom live within a few miles of his old home.

Mr. Nash was a member of the Port Rowan rifle company, and when the 39th Battalion was formed, he joined on the companies and was out in 1866, during the Fenian raid, for which he received a medal and 160 acres of land in the township of Whitney.

In the spring of 1870 he removed to Mersea and located on lot 16 in the 2nd concession, where he remained four years, but as there was no school near the place he sold his farm and purchased the west half of lot 227, S.T.R., upon which he built an elegant home, and remained there until his family were all grown up. After selling the farm he moved to Leamington, where he remained until his death.

He held several offices in the township with credit and honor. He was assessor for 8 years, collector for Mersea 9 years, and for several years deputy returning officer. He retained the office of collector for Mersea and treasurer for the agricultural society until ill heath compelled him to resign.

Mr. Nash was an honored member of several societies, having joined L.O.L. No. 555 -- afterwards L.O.L. 898, and later became a member of L.O.L. 617 at Hillman. He was treasurer of the Mersea Agricultural Society at the time the old grounds were sold and the present site purchased.

Mr. Nash was a member of the A. F. & A. M., having joined in 1866, at Port Rowan, was a charter member of Leamington Lodge 290, and has always been in good standing. At the formation of Royal Arch Chapter 119 G.R.C., he became a member, and his brethren assisted in doing him honor at the funeral on Tuesday. In politics he was always a Conservative, loyal to his leader and party, and faithful to his friends.
