Mrs. Ephraim Layman

The death occurred on Monday, 10 Jun 1918 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Richard Mills of South Middleton, of Mrs. Ephraim Layman, one of the oldest residents of Norfolk County, after an illness of about a month.

Mrs. Layman, who was aged 69 years, was born near
St. Williams, and had resided all her life in Norfolk.

Her maiden name was Marie Newkirk, and she was the eldest child of the large family of the late Moses Newkirk, one of the early settlers of Norfolk.

Of 10 sons in her birth family, 5 became medical doctors, four being graduates of the Toronto School of Medicine, three of whom practiced their profession in the Argentine Republic.

The youngest member of the family, Dr. F. M. Newkirk of Bay City, Michigan, graduated at Ann Arbor, and he and one brother, Dr. Moses Newkirk of Mercedes, Argentine, are the only surviving members of the family.

Mrs. Layman was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, and a lady of much refinement of character, and her kind and hospitable qualities endeared her to her relatives and many friends.

Her husband predeceased her 12 years ago. She leaves five children: George of Hamilton; Frank, who resides near Galt; T. M. of Tillsonburg; Mrs. A. C. Doan, and Mrs. N. C. Mills of South Middleton; and nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
