A lightly edited transcription of a page 1 article in the 17 Oct 1918 Simcoe Reformer newspaper.

Robert Goodlet (photo), son of Mrs. Thomas Goodlet, North Talbot Street. Simcoe, has twice been torpedoed.

In March 1915 Robert entered the navy as one of the crew of a transport carrying troops to France, Egypt and Africa.

The vessel was torpedoed 10 Jun 1917 and went down with most of those aboard.

After 18 hours on the sea in a small boat he was picked up, and his next three months were spent in hospital in Africa.

At the end of that period he sailed with the Hiawatha, which was torpedoed and sank on 10 Jun 1918, with many wounded and a loss of 87 lives.

This young man was one of the survivors.

He has since been in a hospital at Liverpool, England.
