Etc. -- John Gilbert injured at Delhi
Introduction | Source Documents | Other Sources | Photocopies | Back

A lightly edited transcript of a page 3 item in the 29 Oct 1880 issue of the Norfolk Reformer.

At Delhi on Thursday, the 21st inst., a serious accident occurred to John Gilbert, a young man working on a pile driver used in erecting a new iron bridge there on the Air Line of the Great Western Railway.

By some means he slipped and the hammer of the pile driver caught his arm on the top of the shoulder joint, and crushing the rest of the arm down to the hand to a jelly.

Dr. Moore, surgeon of the road, assisted by Drs. Wood and Farewell dressed the arm, and at last accounts he was doing very well, but little hope is entertained for his recovery.

Much sympathy is expressed for the family, as he was the sole support of a widowed mother and several small children.
