A lightly edited partial transcript of the Items of Interest column on page 10 of 4 Jul 1918 issue of the Simcoe Reformer newspaper.

An old resident of Norfolk passed away on Sunday, 
20 Jun 1918, in the person of Mr. James Downing 
of Windham.

The late Mr. Downing, who was in his 86th year, 
was born in the County of Suffolk, England, 
coming to Canada when a young man.

The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon at 
2:30 to Oakwood Cemetery, Simcoe. A number of 
Masons were in attendance, Mr. Downing having 
been for many years a member of that order.

His wife predeceased him a number of years ago. 
Of a family of nine children six survive, two daughters, 
Mrs. Thomas McNamara of Windham, and Miss Sarah 
of Simcoe; and four sons, Charles of British Columbia, William and Reginald of Saskatchewan, and Herbert, 
who lives on the home farm.
