A lightly edited transcription of a page 5 article in the 24 Oct 1918 Simcoe Reformer newspaper.

Mr. Roy Coates of Brantford, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph O. Coates, and grandson of Mr. Joseph Coates, died at the home of his parents on Friday morning,
18 Oct 1918 after a short illness, pneumonia induced by influenza, being the cause of death.

A few years ago he had a severe attack of typhoid that weakened his constitution, and it was shortly after he was attacked by influenza that both lungs became involved.

He was taken ill in Brantford, where he had a business, but came home immediately.

He would have been 26 years of age next month, and was engaged to Miss Foster of Hamilton, who could not be present at the funeral as she herself was suffering from the dread influenza.

The funeral was held on Sunday, with Rev. Dr. Dey and Rev. Mr. Fulton officiating.

The pallbearers were Clifford Abbey,
Roger Cropp, Charles Racher,
Harvey Ryerse, Arthur Sovereen,
and C. Tyrrell.

Among people from out of town at the last ceremonies were Miss Foster's mother and brother, Mrs. and Mr. Foster of Hamilton; Clarence Coates, only brother, and Lorne Coates of Toronto, uncle of deceased.
