The Late James Down

James Down, an aged and much respected resident of Courtland, died at his home on Friday, October 22, after an illness of three weeks.

Mr. Down who was eighty-six years of age, was born in Cornwall, England. He came to Canada with his family in 1853, settling first in Peterboro. Some years later he moved to Courtland, where he resided about thirty-five years, and where he engaged in farming.

Owing to his genial disposition he drew many men to his side and won for him the highest respect of the entire community.

His wife predeceased him ninteen years. He leaves eight children, five daughters: Mrs. Wm. Northcote of Welland, Mrs. Martin Sitzer of Courtland, Mrs. Lizzie Hollister of St. Thomas and Misses Bertha and Clara at home; and three sons: Thos. of Courtland, and Richard and John, of St. Thomas.

The funeral took place on Tuesday an impressive memorial service being held in the Methodist church at Courtland. [Funeral details omitted.] The interment was made in the Courtland cemetery.

The pallbearers were Albert Twiss, David White, John Burnett, William Burnett, E. T. Herron and P. Chips. --Tillsonburg Observer.
