New York debutante settled in Delhi

Nancy Pearson Brown, 94, of Lynedoch died 30 Sep 2011, in Toronto. Born 6 Sep 1917, daughter of James and Florence Harrar, Nancy studied art and music, graduating from the prestigious Chapin School on Manhattan's Upper East Side in 1935. She was introduced to New York society at her debutante ball the following year.

She and her mother spent the next year in Paris. Returning to the U.S., she worked for editor, author and humorist James Thurber at 
The New Yorker
magazine. 

She married Royal Navy Lieutenant John M. Brown, DDS, on 
3 Nov 1943 in New York City. They lived in England until the end of World War II, then immigrated to Vancouver, settling in Delhi in 1946. 

Nancy was a founding member of the Delhi Figure Skating Club, competitive judge for the Canadian Figure Skating Association, an active member of the I.O.D.E, St. Alban's Anglican Altar Guild, and the Delhi Golf and Country Club.

An enthusiastic and adjudicated artist, Nancy was a frequent contributor to the Norfolk General Hospital art loan program and active at the Lynnwood Arts Centre. 

The Browns retired to neighboring Lynedoch in the early 1980s. John died 11 Jun 1993.

Nancy enjoyed the company of her neighbors, and Norfolk's beautiful countryside, engraving and etching nearby tobacco fields in later life. She loved the outdoors, gardening, golf, art and family. Her home and gardens were features of local garden tours.

She is survived by two sons, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Arrangements private.

John M. Brown, DDS

John Medwell Brown, 76, of Lynedoch, died in Nofolk General Hospital, Simcoe on Friday, 11 Jun 1993.

Born in Horley, Surrey, England, son of Stuart A. Brown and Clara Medwell, John served in the Royal Navy 1938-1945, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. 

He graduated London University's faculty of dentistry, then University of Toronto in 1947, then practiced dentistry in Delhi until his retirement in 1984.

John was on the governing board of Optimist International, and a former member of the Delhi Optimist Club. He was president, Delhi Figure Skating Club and the Delhi Golf and Country Club. A former chairman of the Lynnwood Arts Centre, he was a member of Simcoe Little Theatre.
