VANESSA

biography -- Anna Smith was the daughter of William and Charity Smith, of the township of Ancaster, County of Wentworth, Ont., born July 31st, 1816, and on Jan. 8th, 1835, she was united in marriage to John Bartholomew, of the township of Barton.

There were born to them six children, three sons and three daughters, William, Henry, Allan, Catharine, Mary and Margaret Melissa all of whom are yet living.

On April 1st, 1835 she and her husband moved to the township of Windham, County of Norfolk, then almost a wilderness, settled on the farm where she has lived for over 56 years.

About the year 1857 she joined the Methodist new connection church of which she remained a consistent member till she was translated to the church triumphant.

Her children have grown up and settled in various occupations, also she was witness [to] many very notable changes in the community, the forest has given place to beautiful buildings and broad clear fields, villages, churches and schools have grown up around her.  She loved to see them all prosper and did what she could towards that end.

She was a faithful wife, a loving mother, and a kindhearted neighbor.  We all mourn the loss of one so good and true, but our loss is her gain.
     Her spirit with a bound
     Left the encumbering clay,
Her tent at sunrise on the ground
     A darkened ruin lay
May we triumph so, and dying find
Our latest foe beneath our feet at all.

The subject of this sketch was the last remaining one of the first settlers in this section of the country.
