The following transcription is of a page 1 article in the 24 Oct 1918 issue 
of the Simcoe Reformer newspaper.

Friends this week have received the sad news that 
Pte. J. Lewis [sic] Downey, 1st Canadian Machine Gun Battalion, E. Battery. B.E.F., was killed in action on 
Sept. 27th.

Pte. Downey was born in Langton and lived there until 
he was seventeen years of age, then going west.

He enlisted in January, 1915, and has been on the firing line for over a year.

A brother, Leo Downey, is now with the Americans in France.
