-- Mrs. George Stephens, who lived near Fair Ground, Houghton Townsend, county of Norfolk, passed away on Easter Sunday. Her husband was more commonly known as "the Indian doctor," and is still living. Her remarkable age was 112 years, her last birthday being Jan. 4. She had barely been able to walk a little with help for many years. She was very small and nearly bent double, although her husband says she once weighed 200 pounds. She was a white woman and was born in Pennsylvania. She had three husbands.

-- Mr. I. E. York has purchased the entire stock of books, stationery, and drugs from Mr. J. F. Aitken.

-- Simconians are greatly pleased to learn that Premier Laurier has invited Col. Tisdale to become a member of his personal staff during the public celebration in England.

-- The death occurred at Villa Nova on Monday, May 10th, of Mr. Joseph C. Wilcox, aged 40 years, after a tegious illness. Deceased leaves a sorrowing family, who have to sympathies of their many friends. He was a member of the Baptist Church, Villa Nova. The funeral took place yesterday. Services in Baptist church, thence to Greenwood cemetery for interment.

-- Dr. Beaupre of Port Dover, died at Thomasville, Georgia, on Monday afternoon of last week. His brother-in-law Mr. T. E. Ryan of Port Rowan, who was with him at the time of his death, brought the remains to his home, Port Dover, and they were interred with Masonic honors on Friday afternoon. The doctor was a man of ability and promise, but was overtaken in early manhood by that dread disease consumption. Two sisters, Mrs. T. E. Ryan and Miss Beaupre, survive him and they have the sympathy of a large circle of friends.

-- Simcoe Town Council is about to buy a gravel pit. Surely our Village County could save money by purchasing one.

-- The books of the Mechanic's Institute will be sold by Bailiff's Sale on Monday next.

-- News of the death of Mr. Isaiah Glover, of Windham Centre, reached this place on Monday, deceased having passed away that day. He has always been a resident of Windham and was a highly respected citizen. He leaves sorrowing family behind. The funeral took place on Wednesday from his late residence to Windham Centre cemetery. Services in church.

-- License Commissioners for North Norfolk held another sittings on Thursday and granted a wine and beer license to Pelham Mabee of Nixon.

-- The returns of the Village Assessor, Mr. A. H. Saltzberry, are in the hands of the Clerk. The assessment is as follows:
real estate, $253,450; personal property and income, $15,200; total, $268, 650.
Population 1897, 1031; 1896, 987; making an increase in the population during the past year of 44 ... 
Number of dogs 25, cows 76, horses 149, pigs 57. 

-- Remember the Auction Sale of Household Effects at the residence of Mr. J. F. Aitken tomorrow at 1 o'clock..
