Some Early Norfolk History

Letter to the Editor...

[after thanking the editor for the recent article on the history of Norfolk County, the author continues...] Allow me to call attention to the third column on second page in that issue, where the following appears,--"The first crown grant in Norfolk bore the date June 22nd, 1796 and gave to Hohnson Butler and his heirs lot 15 in the 14th concession of Windham. Colonel Butler was the first legal owner of real property in Norfolk."

Six years before the above mentioned date Thomas Bowlby received from King George the Third, the deed for,--"four hundred acres of lands comprised of lots No. 4 in the range between the front and 2nd concessions and No. 4 in 2nd concession of Woodhouse."

This deed bears the date October the twenty-fourth, one thousand and seven hundred and ninety; and is witnessed by the Honorable Peter Russell.

The homestead founded by Thomas Bowlby in the year 1790 has for one hundred and five years been resided upon by his successive descendants and the "crown deed" is considered by them as one of their most treasured possessions.

[After another paragraph, the letter is signed...]
