Ladies Lose The First Game
Simcoe Hockeyesses Made Good
Showing Against Woodstock

The Simcoe ladies hockey team played a well-contested game at the Mason Arena last Thursday evening against the well known Woodstock Bloomer Girls, and although the score showed a defeat of ten goals to three, the large crowd of spectators seemed well pleased with the showing the local girls made.

The ice was heavy, and much in favor of the visiting team, some of whom are big girls with weight and strong muscles. The aggregate weight of the Woodstock team would be much more than that of the Simcoe team.

Miss Nesbitt, captain of the Woodstock team, was the mainstay of the visitors, although Miss LeVann was not far behind her in speed and experience in the game. These two girls stood out prominently in a team that can play good hockey.

Mrs. Selby, the star of the local septette, was unfortunately forced to retire at the end of the second period on account of illness.

In the first period there was good hockey on both sides, the locals checking the heavy forwards well and holding the score down to 3 to 1.

In the second period the heavy ice began to tell on the local girls, and their speed was necessarily curtailed. Mrs. Sihler-Brown, playing centre for the locals, won the greatest ovation of the evening when she succeeded in the second period in making a rink-long rush, culminating in a good accurate shot on goal. The goal tender was on the job and stopped the shot, but the Simcoe forward line were all following up close, and in the scramble before the goal, succeeded in getting one through. The period ended 6 to 2.

With Mrs. Selby off Miss Winnifred Kent was put in centre, and Mrs. Sihler-Brown went back on right defense. Some good play was indulged in, but the locals could only get one more in their opponents four, which made the score 10 to 3.

Many who witnessed the game think that had not Mrs. Selby been ill and the ice been keen, there would have been little to choose between the teams.

Miss Miller certainly had lots to do in goal, but pluckily accepted every chance and stopped everything within reason.

The ladies lined up as follows:

Woodstock -- Goal, Miss McKay; left defence, Miss LeVann; right defense, Miss Meeking; centre, Miss Nesbitt; rover, Mrs. Moyer; left wing, Miss Fiddler; right wing, Miss Pedley. Goal umpire, Mr. Moyer; timekeeper, Mr. Douglas.

Simcoe -- Goal, Miss Annie Miller; left defence, Mrs. Benwell; right defence, Mrs. Selby; centre, Mrs. Sihler-Brown, rover, Miss Florence Malcolm; left wing, Miss Lelah Snider; right wing, Mrs. Small. Timekeeper: John Porter.

Dr. A. C. Burt refereed the game, and had no occasion to penalize anyone. The game, outside of a little necessary loafing at times, was a good exhibition and thoroughly enjoyed.

The team has accepted a challenge from the Welland Ladies' Hockey Club, and would have played there on Tuesday evening had the weather not interfered.

The ladies go to Woodstock for the return game tomorrow (Friday) night.
